미국 사우스이스턴신학교 대학원장이자 전도 및 선교학 교수인 척 롤리스(Chuck Lawless) 박사가 최근 ‘내가 본받고 싶은 교회 지도자의 11가지 특징’이라는 제목의 칼럼을 미국 크리스천포스트에 기고했다.

롤리스 박사는 칼럼에서 “나이와 상관없이 리더로 성장할 여지는 많다. 사실 나를 더 나은 리더가 되도록 영감을 주고 도전하는 다른 리더들을 지켜보고 있다”며 지 교회 목사들에게서 발견한 다음의 11가지 지도력을 제시했다. 

1. 그들은 예수를 본받으려고 노력한다.그것이 그들에게 있어 가장 중요한 점이다: 그들은 주님을 기쁘시게 하고 싶어 한다.

( They strive to imitate Jesus. That’s the bottom line for them: they want to please the Lord. )

2. 그들은 결정을 내리고, 뒤늦게 그 방향을 비판하지 않는다. 대개 그들은 기도하는 마음으로 그들의 과제를 대비했기 때문이다.

(They make decisions and don’t second-guess their direction.That’s usually because they’ve prayerfully done their homework.)

3. 실패를 개선의 기회로 본다. 그들은 좌절하거나 포기하지 않는다. 더 나은 일을 위한 전략을 세운다.

(They view failure as an opportunity to improve.They don’t get frustrated and give up; they strategize to do better.) 

4. 그들은 먼저 기도한 다음 계획을 세운다. 그 반대로 하지 않는다.대부분의 지도자들은 “행동가들(do-ers)”이기 때문에, 이 특성은 가장 모방하기 어려울지 모른다.

(They pray first and then plan — not the other way around.This characteristic might be the toughest one to emulate, for most leaders are “do-ers” first.)

5. 그들은 다른 사람에게서 기대하는 것을 진정으로 본보기로 삼는다.그들은 순종적으로 살아가고, 그들의 신앙을 공개적으로 말하며, 아무도 그들이 주님과 함께 동행한다는 사실에 의문을 제기하지 않는다.

( They genuinely model what they expect from others.Because they live obediently and openly speak of their faith, no one questions their walk with the Lord.

6. 그들은 비록 설교를 통해서지만, 분명하게 교인들과 연결되어 있다.이 지도자들 중 일부는 대형교회를 이끌지만, 마치 각 교회 성도들의 가정에 있는 것처럼 독특하게 설교를 통해 연결될 수 있다.

( They clearly connect with their congregation — even if primarily only through the preaching event. Some of these leaders lead megachurches,but they’re uniquely able to connect through preaching as if they were in the individual homes of each church member.)

7. 그들에게는 여전히 그들을 공급해 주는 멘토들이 있다.이 지도자들 중 한 명은 70대이고, 그의 멘토는 90대이다. 이 사람들은 모두 계속해서 철이 철을 날카롭게 하고 있다.

( They still have mentors who pour into them.One of these leaders is in his 70s, and his mentors are in their 90s. All these folks continue to be iron sharpening iron.)

8. 그들의 설교는 암송한 성경구절들로 가득 차 있다.성경에 대한 그들의 지식은 하나님의 말씀에 대한 사랑을 보여주며, 교회 성도들로 하여금 기도하며 기대하는 마음으로 경청하도록 도전을 준다.

( Their speech is peppered with memorized Scripture.Their knowledge of the Bible shows their love for God’s Word and challenges church members to listen to them prayerfully and expectantly.) 

9. 그들은 교회가 가고자 하는 명확한 비전을 가지고 있다. 실제로 그들은 비전을 간결하게 말할 수 있으며, 다음 단계를 위해 계속해서 하나님의 인도하심을 구한다.

( They have a clear vision for where they want their church to go.They can, in fact, usually state that vision concisely, and they’re continually seeking God’s direction for the next steps.) 

10. 그들은 ‘겸손한 자신감’으로 운영한다.그들은 자신이 하나님의 교회를 이끌 자격이 없다는 것을 알지만, 그분이 그들을 부르신 것을 알고 있다.

( They operate with “humble confidence.” They know they don’t deserve to lead God’s church, but they also know He has called them.)

11. 그들은 내일 봉사할 다음 장소를 찾지 않으며 온전히 현재에 자리한다.그들은 하나님의 뜻에 따라 현재를 살고 있다.

( They are fully where they are today — not looking for the next place to serve tomorrow.They live in the present tense of God’s will.)        / 윤광식 기자(kidokilbo@daum.net)
